The House of Mouse's Real-Life Moana Teaser Looks Strikingly Like a Cartoon

The first trailer for the forthcoming real-life version of Moana has made its debut. Would you believe that, similar to many of Disney's live-action remakes, it looks very much like an animated film and far less like a genuine live-action movie?

Spectacular Visuals Which Retain an Cartoonish Look

The trailer for the new version of Moana is certainly spectacular. It features sweeping visuals, gorgeous soundtrack, and familiar characters. Yet, it also appears similar to an animated film. The over-the-top visuals depict characters flying, water acting unnaturally, and Maui transforming into an insect and a winged creature. Each of these effects is accomplished through computer-generated imagery and computer animation. Much like earlier Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of CGI is so high that it raises the question: what makes these movies “real-life” besides the promotional label?

Narrative and Music Fans Know and Love

Whatever the case, this latest Moana appears to be a reimagining of the first tale, complete with fresh versions of the beloved songs. As described in an official summary, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an memorable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”

Fresh Cast and Familiar Stars

At the same time, the teaser includes a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The young actor is stepping into the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the character in the first films.

A key figure who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be playing Maui. Naturally, that role already resembled Johnson, so having him play the part in the live-action version seems logical.

Beloved Mascot Makes an Appearance

Perhaps the highlight moment of the preview arrives in the final shot. Moana's beloved chicken Hei Hei shows up, screaming at the camera. How else to introduce the film’s real icon?

Release Date

The real-life version of Moana arrives in cinemas on July 10, 2026.
