Red Cross Assists Hamas in Recovery for Bodies of Captives in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its personnel accompanied Hamas officials into areas of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by IDF authority to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Terms and Captive Bodies Handover

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on October 10, Hamas is obligated to hand over the bodies of all captives promptly. In exchange, Israel has consented to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far handed back the remains of fifteen of those taken hostage but none in the past five days, as some of those bodies are thought to be in areas beyond the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

ICRC Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the Red Cross joined a participant in the hostilities as the group searched for the remains of the deceased beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” said a spokesperson for the committee.

The spokesperson continued: “The parties to the conflict established the modalities of the mission and delegated the ICRC to serve as a impartial mediator. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

She additionally clarified: “Our team was did not participate in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it engage in the physical recovery of human remains.”

American Ultimatum and Regional Recovery Operations

On Saturday, the US president delivered a 48-hour demand to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to start handing over the bodies of the deceased hostages, which include American citizens, quickly, or the additional nations participating in this great peace will intervene,” he posted on his online channel.

When the two-day window approached, the group, accompanied by the Red Cross, joined Egyptian teams, who were granted permission by Israeli authorities to look for bodies beyond the boundary marking the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An official representative said the delegation would use heavy machinery and trucks in the operation.

Official Confirmation and Media Reports

This development was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that members of the group had been allowed to access sections of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the remains of captives, alongside Egypt’s and ICRC teams.

“For this purpose, representatives were allowed to cross the yellow line,” the official was quoted as saying.

Video published by a regional network appeared to show individuals of a specialized group – part of the organization’s armed faction tasked with guarding hostages – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to a southern city, which lies outside IDF jurisdiction.

Challenges in Finding Hostage Remains

The search for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most delicate issues in the ceasefire reached between the parties. Yet, the attempt to locate the bodies has been difficult from the beginning, given the existence of an estimated enormous amount of rubble across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as unaccounted for, trapped under the debris.

Conflicting Statements on Body Location

Hamas has stated it does not know the precise locations of all the bodies, saying it has lost contact with a number of its units that had been detaining the hostages and were reportedly killed during military strikes.
