Phenomenal Ford Pivotal to Defeating New Zealand

Back in November 2024, England fly-half Ford looked disheartened at Allianz Stadium.

He was called upon off the sidelines to support the hosts close out an historic victory facing the Kiwis, but instead missed a crucial penalty and drop-goal while his team were beaten by two points.

In the wake of those pivotal failures, Ford had to work hard to get another shot to bring victory for the national side.

He played only 25 minutes throughout the Six Nations tournament yet multiple excellent displays, particularly on the warm-weather tour of Argentina and the United States when the Smith players had departed for British and Irish Lions duty, returned him solidly as a starting option.

At 32 years old fully validated the coach's trust by selecting him versus New Zealand, plus the club standout achieved a best-player showing to support England to a first win against the All Blacks in their own stadium for the first time since 2012.

The decisive instant in the game Ford successfully executed two drop-goals in succession immediately preceding halftime.

It helped England overcome a 12-0 deficit to narrow the gap to 12-11 by halftime, ahead of the manager's skilled reserves again delivered during the final period to help his side to a convincing 33-19 victory.

"Credit must be given to the veteran members within our side, particularly Ford," Borthwick told. "In that moment when he converted those drop-kicks, he managed the game just incredibly.

"Last year In my view George entered and performed exceptionally well [facing the Kiwis].

"A kick hit the post and he had a pressured drop-kick, but he played really well.

"He is a phenomenal leader, a brilliant player plus a better human being. We are honored to feature him within our roster."

Drop-goals 'always in the plan'

Ford preparing for a kick

During 2024, the player's errors from the tee were expensive as the team was defeated against the Kiwis - but it was a contrasting result during the match.

The All Blacks commenced strongly during the match, racing into a twelve-point advantage with tries by Leicester Fainga'anuku and Codie Taylor.

Following Ollie Lawrence's powerful finish, Ford's consecutive drop-kicks resulted in the home side bounced into the changing rooms with renewed energy.

"The tough part at those times comes when the board shows twelve to zero, we are able to adhere to our strategy and what we believe the best way to play the game is," Ford said.

"We fought our way back into it and we knew if we started the final period strongly, as reserves joined, we were in a favorable situation.

"Despite having fifteen minutes to go, we found ourselves near our try line after a penalty, thus we encountered obstacles during that phase also.

"I think that's what Test rugby is - who can deal during those situations most effectively."

Each effort came within close succession while the number 10 who executed three crucial kicks during a victory versus Argentina during the 2023 World Cup, showed all his international experience.

Ford hit two drop-goals with Sale in a league contest played in tough circumstances against Bath - it is a skill he is well-practised in.

"These attempts form part of our strategy," Ford continued.

"Steve is such a phenomenal leader that he is always in my ear about it, and correctly so because three points are crucial throughout the match of play."

Ford guided his side brilliantly around the field the complete contest, making smart decisions - both to compete and in finding space behind the visitors' backfield.

His trademark 'spiral bomb' further confused the New Zealand player, who couldn't collect.

Following his start in the English victory versus the Wallabies during the autumn series, Ford passed on the starting role to Fin Smith during the Fiji match the following week.

But the biggest test on paper this autumn occurred versus the multiple World Cup winners, so Ford returned to his position.

The English team, now on a run of ten consecutive victories, play against Argentina this month creating intrigue to discover whether the coach returns with the alternative or persists with Ford.

Whatever choice occurs, Ford proved two years away prior to global competition that there is plenty of career ahead in him.
