A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
