Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing Two Dozen Days In Custody

The ex-president of France will soon publish a memoir next month named Notes from a Cell, detailing the period spent in custody.

The revelation was made shortly following the ex-leader gained freedom while his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire presidential race money provided by the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Solitary Musings

ā€œIn prison one sees little, and activities are scarce,ā€ he notes in a preview, suggesting the account centers around his musings while in isolation rather than a broader observation regarding the strained and struggling French prison system.

ā€œQuiet is absent, which is missing in that facility, where there is endless commotion,ā€ he adds. ā€œThe noise persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world is strengthened while incarcerated.ā€

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, the former leader participated remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He had told the court: ā€œI must acknowledge the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this difficult experience bearable – as it truly is one.ā€

ā€œI never imagined at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark all who experience it due to its intensity.ā€

Historical Context

He, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as ex-leader in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure of France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Reading Material

Unconfirmed is did he manage to go through the texts he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, where a blameless person is sentenced to jail then breaks out to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He remained secluded for his own security in a room of about nine sq metres with his own shower and toilet at La SantƩ prison located in the capital. Two bodyguards occupied the next cell.

It was stated his diet consisted only yoghurts in prison due to concerns meals provided could have been tampered with. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, as per accounts. Not known is if he will detail what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain every day during the incarceration, told the release hearing security would be better released compared to inside. ā€œHe received threats against his life, has heard screaming at night and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.ā€

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody on 21 October after the judiciary imposed a half-decade term for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial is scheduled for next spring.
