Formula 1 has introduced the simplified language that will be used to reference the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is embarking on what is considered the largest technical shift in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, necessitating key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

Throughout races, pilots will tactically deploy electrical energy – potentially on qualifying laps – to secure the optimal lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were undertaken with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terminology would aid comprehension of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to render a range of advanced features of the competition as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for certain devices – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in favor of intuitive labels that clearly indicate the actual function of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that racers will have more power to choose strategies regarding energy deployment, energy recovery, and conservation.

The new regulations feature a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on broadcast screens to aid the viewers' comprehension of the strategic duel.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the current DRS. It provides a surge of additional ERS power deployable when a car is less than a second the leading car to facilitate an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated power boost from the ERS that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver full engine and battery energy at the activation of a control.

Both of these key functions will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is strictly limited.

  • Active Aero: Both the front and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and top speed, and angling down in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Battery Recharge: Cars can recharge the energy store with energy harvested under braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only reduced throttle is required.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be reduced in size and weight compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although squads will naturally regain performance as they develop their cars.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will employ moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will adjust on the straight sections to reduce drag and enhance velocity and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will continue to use 18-inch rims, but the rubber compounds will be narrower, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in power produced by the ICE and the electrical system, a rise from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The hybrid system is streamlined through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey unit that generated electricity from the turbo.

All vehicles will be mandated to operate on carbon-neutral fuel, created from organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
