Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book accommodation upon arrival, yet when I arrived, a large conference was in town and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – only to discover that airport, not like the one back home, is not open all night. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on public transport and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the evening in an establishment that stayed open through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for acing an interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed out of place as a woman spotted me wandering around downtown and asked if everything was alright. I recounted my situation and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, as that’s where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use the bathroom and a protected spot to rest for the evening.

In retrospect, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she took as a woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I operated under my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain very grateful.

I never did go to that university, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish karma has rewarded her generosity many times over. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
